Parker Solar Probe

Why In News?

NASA’s Parker Solar Probe mission is set to fly closest to the Sun’s surface than any other man-made object before it.

Parker Solar Probe is a planned NASA robotic spacecraft to probe the outer corona of the Sun.

The probe will come within 4 million miles (6.4 million km) of the Sun’s surface and will travel at a speed of around 725,000 kmph.

The goals of the mission are-

i) Determine the structure and dynamics of the magnetic fields at the sources of solar wind.

ii)Trace the flow of energy that heats the corona and accelerates the solar wind.

iii)Determine what mechanisms accelerate and transport energetic particles.

iv)Explore dusty plasma near the Sun and its influence on solar wind and solar energetic particles formation.
