No Confidence Motion

Why in News?

The YSR Congress has proposed a no-confidence motion against the NDA government on the issue of granting special category status to Andhra Pradesh.

Collective Responsibility

Article 75 of the Constitution states that the Council of Ministers shall be collectively responsible to the Lok Sabha i.e the ministry stays in office as long as it enjoys the confidence of the majority of the members of the Lok Sabha.

No Confidence Motion

The Lok Sabha can remove the ministry from office by passing the No confidence motion .The motion needs the support of 50 members to be admitted. It is moved for ascertaining the confidence of the Lok Sabha in the council of ministers and if it is passed the Council of Ministers must resign from office.

It need not state the reasons for its adoption in the Lok Sabha and can be moved only against the entire council of ministers, unlike the Censure motion which can be moved against an individual minister or a group of ministers or the entire council of ministers.
