The 3rd National Handloom Day to honour handloom weavers was recently celebrated across the country.
FACTS ( for Prelims)
1.August 7 was declared as the National Handloom Day in 2015 to mark the 1905 Swadeshi movement.
2.The movement was launched in the Calcutta Town hall to protest against partition of Bengal by the British Government. The movement had aimed at reviving domestic products and production processes.

Importance of Handloom-
1.Handloom sector contributes to nearly 15% of the cloth production in the country and also contributes to the country’s export earnings.
2.95% of the world’s hand woven fabric comes from India.
3.Handweaving covers one of the largest sectors of the Indian economy and it provides employment to about 43 lakh weavers.
4.The celebration of the day seeks to promote handlooms and highlight its contribution to the socioeconomic development of the country.
