M-StrIPES

Why in news?

Andhra Pradesh forest rangers have started the 4th national counting of tigers in the Nagarjunasagar- Srisailam tiger reserve.

FACTS FOR PRELIMS

The full form of M-STrIPES is Monitoring System for Tigers’-Intensive Protection and Ecological Status.

It’s a software monitoring system launched by the Indian Government in 2010 in some tiger reserves.

The aim is to reduce vulnerability of Tigers.

The system would enable field managers to assist intensity and spatial coverage of patrols in a geographic information system (GIS) domain.

It is a free app that will be made available to staff participating in the tiger census exercise, and they will feed in their observation during the carnivore sign survey and transect marking.

Details such as pellet density, vegetation status and human disturbance, if any, will also be recorded.
