Why in News?

The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) also cleared procurement of 72,400 assault rifles and 93,895 carbines on a fast-track basis for Rs. 3,547 crore to enable the defence forces to meet their immediate requirement for the troops deployed on the borders.




The Government set up a Defence Acquisition Council headed by the Defence Minister. It is the highest forum in the Ministry of Defence (MoD) which, among other things, accords Acceptance of necessity (AoN) or ‘in principle’ approval for capital acquisition proposals estimated to cost upward of INR 300 crore.

The decision flowing from the Defence Acquisition Council are to be implemented by the following 3 Boards –

i)Defence Procurement Board headed by the Defence Secretary

ii)Defence Production Board headed by the Secretary (Defence Production)

iii)Defence Research & Development Board headed by the Secretary (Defence Research & Development)
