Why in news?
Field data collection for tiger enumeration in the country is set to go digital in order to reduce human error and provide more reliable estimates. In the forthcoming All-India Tiger Estimation, to be taken up in December-January, the authorities plan to eliminate the process of manual recording of signs of the carnivore and other habitat details.
FACTS FOR PRELIMS
The full form of M-STrIPES is Monitoring System for Tigers’-Intensive Protection and Ecological Status.
It’s a software monitoring system launched by the Indian Government in 2010 in some tiger reserves. The aim is to reduce vulnerability of Tigers.
The system would enable field managers to assist intensity and spatial coverage of patrols in a geographic information system (GIS) domain
SURVILLENCE OF ENDANGERED BENGAL TIGER
The system’s objective is to strengthen patrolling and surveillance of the Endangered Bengal tiger. Forest guards in tiger reserves are equipped with personal digital assistants and GPS devices to capture data relating to tiger sightings, deaths, wild life crime and ecological observations while patrolling.
Additional target outcomes are the evaluation of human pressure and ongoing monitoring of habitat change.
