12 initiatives to rejuvenate Indian agriculture

Why in news?

Government initiatives like Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana, the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY),  e-NAM and Soil Health Cards are  helping the farmers to improve productivity and get better returns,The Vice President said.

The Vice President has outlined twelve initiatives that might help increase productivity and generate adequate returns to farmers.

FACTS FOR PRELIMS

PRADHAN MANTRI KRISHI SINCHAI YOJANA

The major objective of PMKSY is to achieve convergence of investments in irrigation at the field level, expand cultivable area under assured irrigation, improve on-farm water use efficiency to reduce wastage of water, enhance the adoption of precision-irrigation and other water saving technologies (More crop per drop), enhance recharge of aquifers and introduce sustainable water conservation practices by exploring the feasibility of reusing treated municipal waste water for peri-urban agriculture and attract greater private investment in precision irrigation system.

PRADHAN MANTRI FASAL BIMA YOJANA

The new Crop Insurance Scheme is in line with One Nation – One Scheme theme.

Objectives of PMFBY

  • To provide insurance coverage and financial support to the farmers in the event of failure of any of the notified crop as a result of natural calamities, pests & diseases.
  • To stabilise the income of farmers to ensure their continuance in farming.
  • To encourage farmers to adopt innovative and modern agricultural practices.
  • To ensure flow of credit to the agriculture sector.
